A clearly defined clinical role

Medico-legal work can involve several distinct roles. Treating therapists provide ongoing clinical care; case managers coordinate wider plans; and an instructed clinician may assess and report on a defined aspect of need. The remit, audience and status of our input are established before work begins so those roles are not blurred.

This page does not represent every Wheel of Health clinician as an expert witness. Where expert evidence is requested, suitability, competence, independence, instructions and the individual clinician’s experience must be confirmed for that specific matter.

Areas that may be assessed

A referral may ask for a current assessment, review of existing provision or clinical opinion about posture, wheelchair seating and related equipment requirements. The person’s presentation and functional goals remain central regardless of the legal context.

  • Complex disability and catastrophic injury
  • Current and changing wheelchair or seating needs
  • 24-hour postural support and positioning
  • Specialist equipment options and trials
  • Clinical reassessment and equipment review
  • Communication with the instructed professional network

Assessment and evidence

Assessment considers relevant records, the person’s history and goals, current posture and function, environments, care arrangements and equipment. The exact evidence reviewed is determined by the agreed instruction and information made available.

Where recommendations are made, the report distinguishes observed findings, information supplied by others and clinical opinion. Equipment options can be explored through appropriate trials rather than relying solely on product literature or assumptions about future use.

Reporting and professional boundaries

Reports are prepared for the agreed purpose and should not be reused as day-to-day treatment instructions without appropriate clinical consideration. If needs change between assessment and implementation, reassessment may be required.

We do not provide legal advice or determine issues outside the clinician’s professional scope. Enquiries are reviewed individually so the appropriate role, timescale, conflicts and information requirements can be established before acceptance.
