Understanding the person, task and workplace

A workplace assessment considers more than a desk and chair. It explores the person’s abilities, symptoms, posture, movement, working pattern, tasks, equipment and environment together so that recommendations relate to real working life.

The scope is agreed around the referral question and may include office-based, home-based or blended working where specialist clinical reasoning would support sustainable participation.

What the assessment may consider

Assessment may include seating and desk set-up, display and input equipment, positioning, reach, task duration, movement opportunities, fatigue, pain, access and compatibility with other equipment or support strategies.

  • Workstation and specialist seating
  • Posture, movement and task demands
  • Home and office working environments
  • Equipment adjustment or trial
  • Practical recommendations for the individual and employer
  • Review when needs or work arrangements change

Using pressure mapping when it adds value

Where there is a clear clinical question, pressure mapping may add objective information about how the person interacts with a chair or other support surface. The data is interpreted alongside comfort, stability, function and practical use; it does not determine a recommendation on its own.

Recommendations, trials and review

Recommendations may include adjustment of existing equipment, changes to task or working pattern, supported equipment trials, further specialist input or a planned review. Any proposed solution must be clinically appropriate and workable for the person and organisation.
