Specialist Posture and Seating Support for NHS Services and Commissioners

Collaborative specialist assessment, second-opinion and reassessment support for complex posture, wheelchair seating and equipment needs.

Additional specialist capacity for complex cases

NHS and statutory teams may seek independent specialist input where a case is particularly complex, a focused second opinion would help, or reassessment requires posture and seating expertise beyond the capacity available locally. Our input is designed to complement, not displace, established services.

Wheel of Health is an independent organisation. References to NHS referrals describe collaborative working and do not imply NHS endorsement or partnership status.

Potential referral scope

The clinical question and expected output are agreed with the referrer. A referral may concern an individual item of equipment or require a broader understanding of posture across the full day and night.

  • Complex wheelchair seating assessment
  • Specialist postural assessment or second opinion
  • Review of existing equipment and outcomes
  • Clinical reassessment following significant change
  • Joint visits and multi-agency working
  • Equipment trials, reporting and recommendation support

Joint working and clear accountability

Where appropriate and agreed, we work alongside wheelchair services, community teams, therapists, nursing or medical colleagues, social care, education, case managers and suppliers. Shared goals and clear responsibilities help avoid duplication and make it easier to act on assessment findings.

Information governance, consent, safeguarding responsibilities and communication routes are considered as part of the referral process. Only information relevant to the agreed clinical purpose should be shared.

Proportionate recommendations and review

Recommendations are based on assessed need and may include changes to existing provision, further trials or new equipment. Clinical benefit, practical delivery, compatibility, maintainability and resource implications are considered transparently.

The reporting and follow-up arrangement is agreed in advance. Where equipment is implemented or the person’s circumstances are changing, review can help determine whether intended outcomes have been achieved and whether further adjustment is indicated.
